In order to attract more doctors to work for them communities go to places by doing job fairs. Queen’s University, the University of Toronto, the University of Western Ontario and the University of Ottawa are the normal places the one will find job fairs. The director of postgraduate education in the University of Ontario’s Department of Family Medicine said that it is important that medical schools work to ensure that all communities can recruit the doctors best suited to their needs. Having found enough recruits most communities during the Ottawa fair still worry about the future.
It was shown in a recent survey at the University of Toronto, which indicated that 40% of new family physicians who graduated from that school intend to head south. A community who was greatly affected was Deep River, a small town in the upper Ottawa Valley. Its 18 bed hospital isn’t under serviced yet, but townspeople are anxious. The past president of the Ontario Medical Association, as he handed brochures to students, said that with half the University of Toronto class going to the US, you wonder where it will leave communities like theirs.
He also said that less than 5% of Ottawa graduates move to the US. He thinks that the geographical billing restrictions are a huge pressure. There are rules that suggest new doctors who set up in any of 4 major centers can be penalized up to 30% of the normal billing fee. He always teaches his students to take into account all options. Job fairs allow students to get a picture of what to expect when they are done with school so in the mean time they can get training in areas such as obstetrics, mental health, geriatrics, emergency medicine and anesthesia The rural areas attract the residents and students attending the Ottawa fair more than the urban one. There are more services that a physician outside the city can offer to their patients. One can only handle so many cases in the city as they always refer cases to other doctors.
In order to attract doctors communities provide special incentives. Hospitals might provide free secretarial help and office space for a year. Some incentives include recruiters knitting sweaters for new doctors. They can also offer a lot just like the US. Since the government is shouldering their educations they should not be able to leave that easy.
In Marathon, a community of 5500 on the north shore of Lake Superior allow for lifestyle balance so that doctors do not get burned out easily. Small towns have good lifestyles which are good for doctors as they work all the time. There is still an opening in Marathon for 2 or 3 more doctors so that existing staff can take sabbatical leaves and work fewer hours.
In Renfrew, a town of 9000 located 100 km west of Ottawa physicians are needed and they offer a practice and office space. Doctors that decide to work south will eventually return. Their worry about health care environment is why they leave.
