Scene-stealing Song Lyrics Used in Movies
Songs and their lyrics take on a whole new life when they’re used in movies. Suddenly, the imagery that your mind has so creatively conjured up to accompany a song is competing with imagery fed to you by a movie scene. And sometimes, when a movie’s imagery is particularly powerful or unnerving, it’s all you can think of each time you hear the accompanying music and lyrics. Here are a few tunes and lyrics that have been used in movies, and have stolen the show.
“Stuck in the Middle with You” – by Stealers Wheel
Movie: “Reservoir Dogs”
Disturbing. That’s the one word that best describes the catchy, upbeat music and lyrics of this song–disturbing. Why? Because I will forever associate that upbeat music and its catchy lyrics with the “Reservoir Dogs” scene in which Michael Madsen’s psychotic character methodically slashed a bound and gagged police before hacking off his ear. And the scene is even more sinister because Madsen charmingly smiles and dances to this peppy tune as he terrorizes his victim.
“Blue Velvet” – by Bobby Vinton
Movie: “Blue Velvet”
Uh-oh. There’s another severed ear in this one. Not a good sign. And it’s definitely not good when that gory ear is shown as Bobby Vinton warbles the starkly contrasting, sweet melody and lyrics of “Blue Velvet”: “She wore blue velvet/Bluer than velvet were her eyes/Warmer than May, her tender sighs/Love was ours.” But wait–it gets worse. Frank (Dennis Hopper), one of the most horrifically evil villains ever, kidnapped the son and husband of nightclub singer, Dorothy (Isabella Rossellini). In exchange for their lives, Dorothy must submit to depraved sexual violations courtesy of Frank, who loads up on nitrous oxide first. And after all of this, he insists she sing the tender music and lyrics of “Blue Velvet,” for him during each of her performances at the nightclub. I can’t ever hear this song without thinking of Frank and that damn tank of nitrous.
“Don’t You (Forget About Me)” – by Simple Minds
Movie: “The Breakfast Club”
This song hit #1 on the US charts, with a healthy push from heavy airplay on both rock and Top 40 radio stations. And its music and lyrics became definitive of the exceptional movie, “The Breakfast Club,” in which teens sentenced to detention serve their time by trying to figure out who the heck they are and where they belong in the world. These lyrics from the song perfectly sum up the teenagers encouraging each other to expose their vulnerabilities: “I won’t harm you/Or touch your defenses/Vanity and security.” And, in my mind, the movie’s final image of Judd Nelson triumphantly pumping his fist skyward while this song and its lyrics play will always be one and the same.
“Louie Louie” – by The Kingsmen
Movie: “Animal House”
Written by Richard Berry in 1955 and popularized by The Kingsmen in 1963, this song and its sing-along lyrics launched millions of college hangovers after it was featured in the hilarious hit frat-house movie, “Animal House.” There was a “clean” version of the song’s lyrics, as well as an obscene version, which actually came under FBI investigation. In the movie, the song was sung by Bluto (John Belushi), and his fellow frat brothers–complete with obscene lyrics–during their wild parties, and has permanently become associated with the movie. Which beats being associated with images of a severed ear any day.
