Where can I find a laptop with a good graphics card AND a good battery life?
I’ve been looking around bestbuy.com and I see laptops with bad graphics like Intel have great battery lives. But when I look at, say, the gaming laptops, they have 2 hours at the max. I’m looking for a laptop that has something like an nVidia or ATI graphics card with at least 4 hours of battery life.
No MacBooks!! heh heh…
Sorry, there are no laptops that you want.
Even laptops without good graphics cards sometimes struggle to get 4 hours of battery life.
If you’re serious about gaming, get a desktop. That’s my best advice.

Is 3 hours a good battery life for a laptop?
I recently bought an ASUS K42f-A1 notebook and I’m wondering if 3 hours is the normal battery life or is there something wrong with my battery.
It has a 6 cell battery.
It would be par for the course for that kind of laptop, assuming you’re not using an extended/bigger battery.
Of course, you could always do the following to extend battery life:
- Decrease screen brightness
- Turn off wireless radios when not in use (Bluetooth, especially)
- Remove/unplug unused USB devices (they can still draw power if not designed well/not completely compliant with USB spec)
- For most new laptop batteries (lithium-ion and lithium-poly ones), try to keep the battery at between 90% to 30% charge levels. This ensures optimal chemistry. Keeping it at 100% is not always ideal, and the same is true for keeping it discharged or at very low levels.
- You can use most laptops without the battery! If you’re on a desk and would not be using the laptop anywhere else, you can remove the battery, plug in the charger, and use it as a plugged-in computer! This way, you can save on cycling the battery.
- Upgrade the memory. If your laptop only has 1GB of RAM, chances are, the hard disk thrashes more often than if you have more RAM. Upgrading memory will help reduce thrashing, which will mean reducing power consumption spikes in the laptop, which in turn will mean better battery life…
- Finally, use Windows’ built-in power management profiles. They’re incredibly versatile. From there, you could tweak settings on LCD brightness/turn-off, standby times, etc. Feel free to experiment and go for the settings that best suits your usage.
